Santa Maria Novella Pharmacy was one of my favorite stops in Florence. It's often called the oldest pharmacy in the world, and I would venture to say it's also the most beautiful pharmacy in the world. With its grand chandeliers, ornate ceilings, frescoes, and elegant historic rooms, it feels more like stepping into a palace than a pharmacy.

**If you're planning a trip, here's everything you need to know about visiting Santa Maria Novella, including what to look for and what I wish I'd known before I went!**

## A Very, Very Brief History

Okay, stay with me, and I'll keep this as brief as possible! Santa Maria Novella dates back to 1221, when Dominican friars established a religious community in Florence and began growing medicinal plants in a botanical garden. They used these plants to create remedies, aromatic waters, and balms, and word of their preparations eventually spread beyond the monastery.

In 1612, the pharmacy officially opened to the public, and it didn't take long for its products to gain a reputation, even reaching the Medici court. Over the centuries, the collection expanded to include perfumes, soaps, skincare, and home fragrances. Today, Santa Maria Novella still draws on its centuries-old traditions, and visiting its original Florence location is a pretty special way to experience that history firsthand.

## What Is Santa Maria Novella Known For?

Although the word *pharmacy* is part of its name, Santa Maria Novella is not a typical modern drugstore. Think of it instead as a historic perfumery and beauty boutique, with a range of products inspired by botanical ingredients.

Here's a look at what you'll find during your visit:

### Perfumes and Fragrances

Fragrance is one of the highlights of Santa Maria Novella. The collection includes eau de colognes and eau de parfums, with scents ranging from fresh and floral to warm and more complex.

One of the brand's best-known fragrances is **Acqua della Regina**, a scent associated with Catherine de' Medici. According to the brand's history, a Florentine perfumer accompanied Catherine when she left Florence to marry the future King Henry II of France in 1533\.

### Soaps and Bath Products

Santa Maria Novella is also known for its soaps and bath products, which make particularly nice gifts or small souvenirs from Italy.

You'll find solid soaps, bath and shower products, and other body-care items. They're lovely gifts to bring home or a little treat for yourself.

### Skincare and Body Care

The collection also includes skincare, lotions, hand creams, and other personal-care products. If you enjoy discovering European beauty brands while traveling, this is a good opportunity to browse products that may be less familiar than those stocked by major international retailers.

### Home Fragrance

You can also shop for products designed to scent your home, including candles, diffusers, potpourri, and other aromatic accessories.

### Which Items Should You Consider?

- **Best for a signature fragrance**: Acqua della Regina, with its connection to Catherine de' Medici.
- **Best small souvenir**: A bar of soap or a hand cream.
- **Best for the home**: Potpourri, candles or a diffuser.
- **Best for history lovers**: Products associated with the pharmacy's traditional botanical preparations.

## How to Get to Santa Maria Novella Pharmacy

Santa Maria Novella Pharmacy is located at Via della Scala 16, 50123 Florence, Italy.

If you're traveling by train, it's conveniently located near Firenze Santa Maria Novella, Florence's main railway station. Depending on your route through the city, you can easily reach the shop on foot from the station and continue exploring the historic center afterward.

If you're already visiting central Florence, the pharmacy can be incorporated into a walking itinerary without needing a separate excursion.

I would avoid planning your entire day around this one stop. Instead, pair it with nearby sights, a leisurely lunch, or an afternoon of exploring Florence's shops and historic streets.

## Once You Arrive

One of the best parts of visiting Santa Maria Novella is exploring its historic rooms, each with its own character and story.

The Historical Shop is the centerpiece, with ornate ceilings and grand chandeliers that make it feel more like a palace than a pharmacy.

The Green Room, once used for serving the pharmacy's liqueurs, is equally elegant, while the Ancient Apothecary offers a glimpse into the world of traditional remedies and botanical preparations.

Don't miss the Sacristy, either, with its beautiful frescoed ceiling. Together, these spaces make a visit feel like stepping back in time, long before you even begin browsing the perfumes and skincare products.

### The Santa Maria Novella Pharmacy Museum

Beyond its beautiful interiors, Santa Maria Novella has a fascinating museum showcasing the history of the pharmacy and its centuries-old traditions. Here, you'll find historic apothecary equipment, antique vessels, and archival materials, including old handwritten manuscripts containing recipes for botanical preparations, perfumes, and other remedies.

One particularly interesting document is *Segreti della Fonderia Granducale*, a collection of recipes compiled in the 18th century by Fra' Cosimo Bucelli. Some of the formulas recorded in these historic texts are still used in products made by Santa Maria Novella today, offering a fascinating glimpse into how the pharmacy's traditions have been preserved over the centuries.

## Final Thoughts

Santa Maria Novella Pharmacy was one of my favorite stops in Florence, and I'd absolutely recommend adding it to your itinerary. Even if you're not particularly interested in perfume or skincare, the historic interiors alone make it worth a visit. It's not every day you get to shop beneath grand chandeliers and frescoed ceilings in a place with more than 800 years of history!

Whether you leave with a new fragrance, a few soaps to bring home, or just some photos of the beautiful interiors, Santa Maria Novella is one of those places that makes Florence feel so special. Don't skip it!
