Tuscany is one of my favorite places to visit in Italy, and **La Moscadella by The Isabella Experience** was one of the best hotel experiences I've had anywhere in the world. **If you're considering La Moscadella for your own trip, here's my review, including what we loved, what to know before booking, and whether I recommend it as a home base for exploring Tuscany.**

## About La Moscadella by The Isabella Experience

La Moscadella is a boutique property in the Val d'Orcia area of southern Tuscany. Housed in a gorgeous 16th-century building, the property has been thoughtfully restored to combine historic architecture with modern comforts.

The property offers 12 individually styled rooms and a private cottage. Inside, you'll find refined furnishings, artwork, beautiful textiles, and antiques. I particularly loved the local antiques incorporated into our room. Rather than feeling like a standard hotel, La Moscadella has a distinct character that reflects its historic setting.

The property also has an on-site restaurant, breakfast service, and a swimming pool. We appreciated having breakfast each morning and the option to enjoy dinner without leaving the property after a full day of exploring.

## How to Get to La Moscadella

La Moscadella is located in the Tuscan countryside near [Castelmuzio](https://www.atlasette.com/castelmuzio-italy/), so getting there requires a little more planning than reaching a hotel in a major city. There isn't a direct train connection to the property from Rome or Florence, and you'll need to arrange transportation for the final leg of your journey.

**By car:** Renting a car is by far the most convenient option for exploring Tuscany at your own pace. We had a rental car throughout our stay and recommend it to anyone planning to visit nearby towns and wineries independently.

**By private driver:** If you'd rather not drive in Italy, you can arrange a private driver to take you to La Moscadella. This can be a good option if you prefer not to rent a car. Contact the property before your trip to discuss transportation arrangements and pricing. However, without your own transportation, your options for exploring the region will be very limited unless you're prepared to hire a driver for each outing.

## Our Experience Staying at La Moscadella

One of the things that stood out most during our stay was how personal the experience felt. Each morning after breakfast, we spoke with the staff about what we wanted to do that day, whether that meant visiting a nearby town, arranging an experience, or making a restaurant reservation.

They were happy to help us plan around our interests, including recommending activities and coordinating tickets and reservations. I really appreciated this approach because it made exploring the region easy and stress-free.

We weren't expecting these beautiful fresh flowers in our room, but they made for a warm welcome!

Our bed was SO comfortable! I loved the canopy too.

### Our Room: Italian and Etruscan Antiques, Thoughtful Touches

I loved our room at La Moscadella. Outfitted with Italian and Etruscan antiques, the space had character and history, feeling more like a guest room in a friend's gorgeous Tuscan villa than a typical hotel.

Thoughtful details were everywhere, including fresh flowers, seasonal fruit, sweets, and wine upon arrival.

Highlights inside the room included a spacious walk-in closet, a comfortable bed (almost *too* comfortable for getting up early to sightsee!), and a modern bathroom with a soaking tub, walk-in shower, double sinks, bidet, and luxury toiletries.

The room was easily one of the highlights of our stay.

### Breakfast at La Moscadella

We took advantage of the on-site breakfast several mornings. It's available for an extra fee, but worth it both for convenience and the selection. It was a buffet with no shortage of options, including freshly squeezed juices, made-to-order coffee, pastries, eggs, bacon, cold cuts, and more.

### Dinner at La Moscadella and Nearby

We had dinner at La Moscadella's on-site restaurant during our stay and very much enjoyed an upscale seasonal Tuscan meal without having to leave the property. After a day spent exploring the surrounding towns, it was nice to have the option of dinner right where we were staying.

We also tried a local restaurant in Castelmuzio, [Locanda di Casalmustia](https://www.locandadicasalmustia.it/ristorante/?ref=atlasette.com), one evening for my 40th birthday dinner. It was very local and rustic, with delicious food.

I recommend asking the staff for restaurant suggestions and reservations during your morning conversation. They know the area well and offered helpful recommendations tailored to our plans and interests.

### On-Site Experiences and Classes

La Moscadella offers experiences and classes that you can enjoy during your stay. Ask about current offerings when you make your reservation or upon arrival, as availability may vary.

During our stay, we enjoyed an olive oil class where we learned about how Tuscan olive oil is made and gained a greater appreciation for its role in the region's food culture. To this day, we still take what we learned into consideration when purchasing olive oil.

It was also a great opportunity to meet and chat with other guests. As always, we met fellow travelers who gave us great tips and recommendations about other destinations!

### The Pool and Grounds

La Moscadella also has a gorgeous, well-maintained swimming pool. We didn't end up using it during our stay, so I can't offer a firsthand review of the swimming experience, but the pool itself was beautiful.

For travelers visiting during the warmer months, the pool offers an appealing option for relaxing and enjoying some downtime between sightseeing trips.

## Exploring Tuscany From La Moscadella

One of the reasons we chose La Moscadella was its location. We wanted to explore the Tuscan countryside and visit some of the region's best-known towns while staying somewhere quiet at the end of the day.

During our stay, we visited Pienza, Montepulciano, and Montalcino. These three towns are well-positioned from La Moscadella for a road trip through the Tuscan countryside.

### Pienza

Pienza is a beautiful hilltop town known for its Renaissance architecture, views over the surrounding countryside, and pecorino cheese. It's a lovely place to wander through narrow streets, browse local shops, and stop for lunch or a coffee.

I recommend making time to sample the local pecorino and enjoy the views over the Val d'Orcia while you're there. Pienza is also a good place to pick up regional food products to bring home.

### Montepulciano

Montepulciano is my favorite Tuscan hilltop town, with historic streets, beautiful architecture, wine cellars, and views across the countryside. It's a good choice if you'd like to combine sightseeing with wine tasting or a leisurely lunch.

Be prepared for some uphill walking, as is typical of many towns in this part of Tuscany, but that's also part of their appeal. (I did NOT wear appropriate footwear; please learn from my mistake!)

### Montalcino

Montalcino is a historic hilltop town best known for Brunello di Montalcino, one of Tuscany's most celebrated wines. If you're interested in wine, it's an especially good addition to a southern Tuscany itinerary. I recommend arranging winery visits in advance. During our stay, the staff at La Moscadella recommended a family-owned winery where we enjoyed lunch and a wine tasting, and they took care of the arrangements and reservations for us.

Siena is also about an hour and ten minutes from La Moscadella by car, although we didn't visit on this particular trip. If you're planning your own itinerary, consider which towns you'd most like to explore and how much time you want to spend driving each day. This will help you decide whether a countryside property like La Moscadella is the right home base.

## Things to Know Before Booking La Moscadella

Although we loved our stay at La Moscadella, I don't think it's necessarily the right choice for every traveler. Here are a few practical considerations to keep in mind before booking.

### Be Ready to Relax

La Moscadella is peaceful, which was exactly what I wanted. I loved being able to return to a quiet property after spending the day exploring.

However, if you're looking for nightlife, lots of restaurants within walking distance, or a livelier atmosphere in the evenings, I recommend considering a stay in Pienza or Montepulciano instead. Both offer easier access to town life and more opportunities to head out for dinner or a drink without getting back in the car.

Neither option is necessarily better; it comes down to the kind of trip you want. For me, the quiet setting was a major selling point, but it's worth considering before booking.

### Plan Your Tuscan Itinerary

Because the property is set in the countryside and the surrounding towns are spread out, I recommend planning your sightseeing around day trips.

Think about which towns you'd like to visit, whether you'd like to include wine tastings, thermal baths, or other experiences, and where you'd like to have dinner.

One thing I appreciated about La Moscadella was the staff's willingness to help us work through those decisions each morning. You don't need to have every detail mapped out in advance, but having a general idea of your priorities will help you make the most of your time.

I also recommend leaving some room in your itinerary to enjoy the property itself. With beautiful interiors, a pool, and the option to dine on-site, there's no need to fill every hour with sightseeing.

## Is La Moscadella Worth It?

For us, La Moscadella was a wonderful place to stay in Tuscany. I loved the historic character of the property, our beautiful room, the personalized service, and the breakfasts. I also appreciated having the option to enjoy dinner on-site or venture into nearby Castelmuzio for a more rustic meal.

I recommend La Moscadella to travelers looking for a peaceful countryside retreat with attentive service and beautiful interiors, particularly those planning to explore southern Tuscany by car. If you'd prefer to have restaurants, shops, and evening activities within walking distance of your hotel, I recommend considering accommodations in Pienza or Montepulciano instead.

For the kind of trip we wanted, though, [La Moscadella](https://www.theisabellaexperience.com/en/moscadella/?ref=atlasette.com) was an excellent choice. It offered a beautiful place to return to after a day of exploring, and the personal touches made our stay feel especially memorable.

I'd happily return, and I hope it's sooner rather than later!
